Banjo Straps - Selection and Use

!±8± Banjo Straps - Selection and Use

Banjo straps are similar to guitar straps. They are worn over the shoulder and across the chest to keep the instrument steady and at a comfortable height. Most are adjustable between 40 and 52 inches and are adjusted by using one of two methods. The most popular is using a buckle with a sliding strap, similar to those on a backpack. A loop button method is also frequently used. It provides a clean, contemporary look, especially if a shoulder pad is not used. Though straps are created using several different materials, both natural and synthetic, leather is the most popular.

When attaching the banjo strap, many players attach the front end of the strap one bracket below the heel of the neck, the rear end of the strap one bracket below the tailpiece. Other methods include the use of cradle or web straps. They thread through all the brackets. Due to the significant differences in weight from one type of banjo to another, it is recommended that cradle straps be used with the heavier instruments. It provides greater stability. If you already have a guitar strap, there are kits available to modify it for use with a banjo.

There are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a banjo strap.  If you have difficulty balancing the instrument, consider a leather strap. It holds the banjo in place better than a synthetic strap. Make sure it is adjustable. Though most are, occasionally you will come across one that is not. If your instrument is heavy, consider a wide, padded strap, between three and four inches. It will cut down on discomfort when worn for long periods of time. Avoid elastic straps. Though it sounds cool, they are too stretchy and are more of a nuisance than a convenience.

From mass produced polypropylene and nylon mesh banjo straps to high quality handmade or custom straps, there is a wide array to choose from. Whether you prefer something edgy and contemporary, laid-back and vintage, or hand-tooled and bejeweled, there is something to fit every style, trend and budget. The most important thing is that you get a strap that you think looks good.  Copperpeace offers a variety of straps from smooth and hand embroidered leather to leopard print and lace.
